Carmel Mercado
is a self-taught artist on a quest to celebrate life and joy with her communities.
Carmel combines techniques in acrylic painting and mixed media on canvas with digital illustration. She has been in several juried shows in the Boston, Orlando, and Seattle areas, and is also an accomplished public artist, with works that can be found in the City of Bellevue, Kent, Kirkland, and Tukwila public collections. Carmel has collaborated with creative agencies for multi-city art-related programs and has dabbled in the food label scene to help small businesses. Carmel’s whimsical style has been influenced by her first career as a medical professional and from her travels abroad. As a nod to her life as a pediatric ophthalmologist, many of the animal characters in Carmel’s pieces have eye wear to encourage positivity around glasses wear. Her art has been featured at the annual American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus national conference/Children’s Eye Foundation gala, Women in Ophthalmology national symposium, and within Seattle Children’s Hospital. Carmel obtained her B.S. in Biology with a humanities concentration in Foreign Languages/Literatures at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her medical degree at the Johns Hopkins University.
